Gone is the old Grand Rapids Press. Replacing it at the corner of Michigan Street and Monroe Avenue is MSU’s $88.1 million Biomedical Research Center.

“It was a fundamental change when we said the headquarters of the Medical School must be in Grand Rapids.”

That’s Dean, Dr. Marsha Rappley recalling the decision back in 2005 and the construction of the $90 million dollar Secchia Center. A decade later, the nearly 163,000 square foot research facility will become a part of what is being called the Medical Mile’s Innovation Park. A space MSU President, Lou Anna Simon says has room to grow.

“There’s space for more buildings. There’s space for more energy. And we didn’t move ahead originally with doing it by putting everything here at once because we think that by waiting a bit and having people understand that the building will be a reality and the kinds of people it will attract others to want to come to this community and do related research.”

The work of 260 scientists and 44 principal investigators will spend lab time focusing on women’s health, neurosciences, skin cancer, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease research along with a new program for study autism.
The research will begin in 2017.
